Updating Layertrail
Layertrail doesn’t contact an update service at startup or in the background. To check for a new version, choose Help → Check for Updates…, which opens the releases page in your browser. Compare it with the version in About Layertrail.
Release channels
Section titled “Release channels”- Alpha (
v0.1.0-alpha.1): frequent changes. Use with copies of your projects. - Beta (
vX.Y.Z-beta.N): broader testing once alpha feedback is addressed. - Stable (
vX.Y.Z): supported releases.
Installing an update
Section titled “Installing an update”Close Layertrail, then install the new build the same way as the first time:
- macOS: open the DMG and replace Layertrail in Applications.
- Windows: run the new installer. Your project folders are separate from the app and aren’t touched.
- Linux (not officially supported): replace the AppImage and make the new file executable.
This works offline too: download on a connected computer and copy the installer over.
After updating, open a project and check its name, nodes, and snapshot timeline.
Coming from Manifest
Section titled “Coming from Manifest”Layertrail was called Manifest up to version 0.1.0-alpha.1. Because the app’s identity changed with its name, your system treats Layertrail as a new app: it installs next to Manifest instead of replacing it.
Layertrail doesn’t open Manifest projects (folders containing Manifest.manifestproject) or restore .manifestarchive files. Keep Manifest installed for as long as you need those projects. Don’t remove it until you have recreated what you need in Layertrail, or kept a copy of the project folders somewhere safe.
Rolling back
Section titled “Rolling back”You can reinstall an older version, but a project opened by a newer version may have been migrated to a newer format, and the older app can’t undo that. Before installing a prerelease, copy any project folder you care about. To roll back, restore that copy.
